Ranger - Archetype Description, Abilities, Powers - crowfallguides.com

Ranger is one of playable classes / archetypes in Crowfall. It’s a mixture of ranged and melee warrior. You can attack enemies from distance using bow or you can fight using twin swords. This class plays Specialist Role.

  • Gender: Male, Female
  • Role: RDD + Melee fighter
  • Power Resources: Arrows and Energy

Arrows are used for most of the Ranger’s attacks and powers in ranged tray. In most MMO games ammo for bows is unlimited. You can shoot as many times as you wish. But in Crowfall it is NOT! Developers decided to make ammo expendable resource. That means you will have to keep an eye on the amount of arrows you have in your inventory.
Arrows have damage value and damage type (slashing, piercing, crushing, fire, etc.). Using different arrows allow ranger to counter different armor types. This is pretty similar to how other classes can use different weapons types.

Arrows are automatically used from quiver equipment slot. What happens after the last arrow is used and you have no ammo? You have to switch from range combat to melee…

Energy is a source for all the powers in the melee tray and for some powers in ranged.

    • Ranger starts with zero energy.
    • If the ranged tray is active your energy regenerates, if the melee tray is active energy regeneration is turned off.

    Multiple Power Trays

The archetype allows you to play as a melee or ranged damage dealer. There are 2 Power Trays for this. You can swap between them anytime by pressing T key. Pay attention: when you swap between trays there will be 1.5 second cooldown on all the abilities in the new tray. That’s why switching between trays is not the best idea when you need to act fast.

When you swap your primary weapon will be also changed. When you have ranged tray you have bow in your hands and when you swap to melee your character automatically takes twin swords.

    Ranger Abilities and Powers

    Ranged Tray

    Skill Effect
Basic Attack left mouse button click triggers a Straight Shot. Simple bow attack that can combo into Explosive Shot. This attack can be charged meaning that you can affect its strength by holding the button and then releasing it.
Spin Step right mouse button ability. It’s a Dodge Roll skill that allows to change position fast. Uses Stamina. This ability is for both trays: melee and range.
    Powers Bar
Rapid Fire press and hold this key in order to fire up to 10 arrows in 3 seconds. If the arrow doesn’t land critical hit, player receives a buff that increases his crit chance by 10%. The buff stacks until player does land critical hit.
Ricochet Shot charged ability that hits enemy and one more target if it’s within 6 meter radius from the first target. Then if there is a third target within 12 meters it will also be hit. If you hit 3 enemies with this power you receive a Hotshot buff which gives +150% critical hit damage for 10 seconds.
Suppression Shot ground-targeting AoE ability which suppress up to 3 enemies in the area. Affected enemies can’t use any powers in their tray for up to 6 seconds.
Barrage ground-targeting AoE ability. Character shots arrows on the area for 6 seconds hitting up to 5 targets. If you use it with Sustain ability you will be able to lifesteal a lot!
Explosive Trap places a trap up to 35 meters away from hero. It can be stuck to the ground or wall. It takes 1 second for the trap to arm and it’s ready. Trigger radius is 3 meters. If it’s not triggered within 60 seconds it explodes. The trap also deals damage to structures (for example if it’s stuck to the wall).
Archer’s Stake creates an ice barrier that gives huge attack power buff and set of damage mitigation stats as long as you stay near that barrier.
Conceal makes character invisible as long as he stays in place and doesn’t attack or doesn’t take damage. It’s not “Stealth”; it’s just “Hide” power.
    Iframe Power
Sustain is the Rangers iFrame power for both trays. When it’s activated, character receives Lifesteal ability that allows to absorb health of enemy for a short period of time.
    Passives
Retaliate : every class in Crowfall has this ability. You can’t see it on your skill bar but it appears when you are knocked down. It returns you back to your feet dealing AoE damage to surrounding enemies.
Controlled Breathing is a passive ability that works only if ranged tray is active. This ability regenerates energy of the character.
Sprint a character moves faster when you hold Shift key. Stamina is consumed.

    Melee Tray

    Skill Effect
Sinister Slash : basic left mouse button attack that combos into Wicked Slash and Vile Slash. These attacks deal damage and reduce target’s physical mitigations (piercing, slashing, crushing) by 5%, 10%, and 20% respectively. No energy is required for this attack.
Spin Step right mouse button ability. It’s a Dodge Roll skill that allows to change position fast. Uses Stamina. This ability is for both trays: melee and range.
    Powers Bar
Forest Step character blinks a short distance forward and receives 3 seconds movement speed buff. This attack combos into Tendon Slice which reduce movement speed of the target.
Slice N Dice press-and-hold ability that executes a series of deadly swings over a short period of time.
Sweep is a cone attack that deals damage and buffs one nearest group member for +15% damage on next attack. This attack combos into Jab (hits target with critical attack) or into Disengage which deals damage and backflips character 25 meters away. During the backflip Ranger’s tray will be switched to range without global cooldown on all the abilities.
Cross Slash fast attack that deals damage and applies bleed debuff which stacks up to 3 times.
Explosive Trap places a trap near the ranger. The trap works similar to ranged version of this ability.
Twin Surge damages enemy and recovers 15 stamina on successful hit. This ability combos into Laceration, applying Weapon Break to the enemy. This debuff decreases damage dealt by 20% for a short period of time.
    Passives
Retaliate every class in Crowfall has this ability. You can’t see it on your skill bar but it appears when you are knocked down. It returns you back to your feet dealing AoE damage to surrounding enemies.
Wicked Intentions is a passive that works only in melee mode. When Ranger lands critical hit he regenerates small portion of energy.
Sprint character moves faster when you hold Shift key. Stamina is consumed.

    Melee vs Ranged Playstyle

In the beginning Ranger is a class for ranged combat. All the powers are designed to make player use melee only when it’s really necessary (for example when you are out of arrows). But later on when you level up you can choose a promotion class that increases energy pool and makes melee tray much more useful. You will be able to spend majority of your time as melee warrior.

    Aiming

You will have to aim a target first in order to hit it. The mechanism of aiming is quite similar to Confessor’s fireball attacks. The only exception is that arrows are much lighter and have a much higher velocity. Most of Ranger’s attacks will require some degree of skill to hit enemy.

Ammo requirement, two different play styles (ranged and melee) and pure projectile aiming make the class more difficult to master. You will have to spend some time before you will be able to use full power of this archetype.
